Throughout the Bible God speaks to people about repentance.
From the words first occurrence in Hosea 13:14, “I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.” to the last occurrence in 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” God is letting people know He has provided us with a way to remit our sins.
Though the Old Testament has but the one scripture in Hosea that first occurrence tells us in no uncertain terms that with the arrival of Jesus it will usher in the miracle of repentance.
The first occurrence in the New Testament is found in Matthew 3:8, “Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:” The colon signifies what those fruits are to be in the next verse:
Matthew 3:9, “And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham
v10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
v11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
v12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
In those five verses are a treasure trove of truth regarding this miracle of repentance that God used Hosea to prophesy about and now with Jesus’ arrival on the scene are now come to pass for this and future generations to take ahold of.
In the next lesson we will examine those five verses to discover what repentance can do for people, where it takes place in a persons life, when it happens, why God provided it and who it is for.
Take away from this lesson: God’s Word has provided people many miracles they can take advantage of – anytime.
Until next time: Pray and study the scriptures outlined here and ask God to reveal His truth about them to you personally.
In Jesus Name.
